Our Story

The story of TypeRoom starts with a web design and development company (Internet Simplicity) that grew to have a speciality in CMS development and implementation.

For about 3 years Internet Simplicity dealt extensively with web content management systems mainly with local businesses in the Silicon Valley. Many many hours of research and development were spent on various client projects looking for CMSes, integrating and working with pre-built CMSes, and even rolling several custom CMSes of our own. This experience provided us with quite a bit of insight into what the shortcomings were of the systems that were out there, as well as some bright ideas on what would make a better CMS. From this knowledge, we began building our own CMS system and framework.

This first system we internally called SimpleCMS and was prototyped initially in 2005. The foundation of the idea was that there would be no admin interface, but the website itself would be the "admin interface" when in editing mode. This immediately got very positive feedback from customers who reported that they felt very comfortable editing their site in an environment that was so familiar (their own website).

TypeRoom was born when Reilly had an idea of how to automate the installation of our CMS and allow it to be used without requiring the manual labor of an "install process", or complex migration of hosting accounts. Once this sparked off the new direction, it was a collaborative effort of ideas an innovation driven by our excitement of how this could change the way people think about content management systems. The idea took shape over the course of almost a year with Ian's design and project management, Joren's front-end JavaScript and CSS, and Matt's infrastructure and back-end development skills.

Essentially, TypeRoom into what we envisioned our ideal CMS to be, taking what we learned from our previous developments.

TypeRoom was and is bootstrapped from the experience, finance and infrastructure of Internet Simplicity.
